15 Best Game Room Game Ideas: Aussie Man Caves Guide

Couple Playing Foosball

Next to a well-stocked bar and a few good mates, games are an essential part of any kick-arse man cave. Here I’m talking particularly about active, arcade and table games as opposed to board games like Monopoly and Scrabble, though they can have their place as well.

Just like a good pub, these types of popular indoor games are a great way to get the crew together, break the ice and take the piss engage in stimulating conversation and banter.

Not only that, an active indoor table game is a great way to work off a few of the extra calories from all the beer and chips.

Here are 15 man cave games to think about. Some are traditional man cave favourites, while others are a little more off-the-wall ideas that might inspire you to try something different in your man cave.

Pool and Snooker Tables

A pool or snooker table is the traditional man cave centrepiece.

That’s for good reason. The rules are simple, pretty much everyone knows how to handle a pool cue (for good or bad), and it’s great for milling about with a drink in hand and creating a social atmosphere. Better still, it gives you a chance to impress folks with your carefully choreographed Tom Cruise moves.

When it comes to choosing a pool or snooker table, one of the biggest considerations for any man caver is how much space have, your budget and could the space be better used for other games or entertainment options you’ll use more often.

The good news is that, no matter your space or budget constraints, there are a wide variety of snooker and pool table options with different styles and sizes to suit any man cave configuration.

If you’re looking for a new pool or snooker table, there are a bunch of speciality retailers throughout Australia. A simple Google search for pool or snooker tables in your area should do it. If you’re looking to save a little money, check out used tables on sites like Gumtree or eBay.

Amazon Australia has a great variety of snooker and pool tables to suit any budget. Check out the most popular pool and snooker tables here.

Darts

One-hundred and eightyyyyyy … Darts is another man cave essential. Fun, easy-to-play and cheap to set up, it’s no wonder darts is up there with pool and snooker as the most popular pub sports of all. Any game that can be played with a schooner in one hand is my kind of game.

So why should darts be at the top of your ideal man cave games list?

  1. Buying a dart board and a few darts is as cheap as chips,
  2. You can whack up a dart board pretty much anywhere,
  3. Pretty much anyone can play, and the rules are simple,
  4. Serious injuries are relatively infrequent.

You might also consider an electronic dart board that provides things like sound effects and automatic scoring for a bit of extra atmosphere. Electronic dartboards often come with soft-tipped darts that make them a little safer and less likely to muck up your Gyprock. By the way, the traditional type of dartboard is called a bristle dartboard.

Hook and ring toss games are a variation on the theme. The name kind of gives away how it works. A good option for kids.

Table Tennis or Ping Pong

A table tennis or ping pong table is not only great for socialising but also for getting a bit of exercise. It’s also a great family game.

It’s a great game for two or four players, and you can even play by yourself with a foldable table. There are even table tennis robots commonly available if you want to test yourself against an opponent.

Better still, home table tennis or ping pong tables are typically foldable and easily stored away when you’re not using them.

For the average man cave or games room, you don’t need a professional-quality table. There are plenty of good-quality affordable table tennis tables available from speciality and general sports retailers that will do the job just fine.

You can get a good idea of the table tennis and ping pong table options on Amazon Australia.

Pinball

A pinball machine is a staple in any man cave of greatness.

Flying balls, flashing lights, weird electronic voices and over-the-top muzac, frenzied button pushing and frustration-driven lifting and banging. What more could you want in a game?

Tight on space? There are a wide variety of more compact and affordable pinball machines and games available. Take a look at the pinball machine options on Amazon Australia.

If you’re looking for a used or vintage pinball machine, sites like Gumtree and eBay are good places to start. There are also a bunch of specialty retailers around Australia. A Google search should help you find one.

Air Hockey

Air hockey is one of my personal favourites. There’s nothing like the sound of pucks flying and the mystified screams of your opponent as the puck glides effortlessly through the goal mouth.

Here I’m talking about the kind of solid, stand-up air hockey table you used to find in every video game arcade or occasionally pub backroom. The beauty of these full-size tables is that you can really get a bit of muscle behind your shots.

But these full-size tables aren’t the only option. There are a bunch of smaller, lighter and more economical options available.

Like foosball and similar, air hockey is also great for keeping your hand-eye coordination up to speed.

Nok hockey is a variation on the theme, where you play with a puck and small hockey sticks.

Foosball, Table Soccer, Table Hockey

Foosball is another man cave favourite across the world. If you’re not familiar with it, Foosball or table soccer is the one where you have rows of skewered soccer players with handles on each end of the skewers that you twiddle and move in and out as you desperately try to whack a tiny ball into your opponent’s goal.

Like air hockey and pinball, it’s another one of those indoor game-room games that can be surprisingly physical and addictive when you get into it.

Foosball is a particularly good game for four to six players, so it’s great for a group of mates or a family.

Table hockey or rod hockey is an ice hockey variation on foosball if you’re looking for something different. Bubble hockey is another variation, where the hockey table has a clear dome over it.

Arcade Games

If you’re a bloke of a certain age, like me, you’ll remember when electronic arcade game machines were the bees’ knees in gaming. Despite (or because of) the one-dimensional graphics and simplistic game goals, retro arcade games like Space Invaders, PacMan, Galaga and Donkey Kong are still really popular, with both young and old.

The old-school, stand-up or sit-down coffee table-style arcade game machines are great for bringing back the memories in your man cave.

You don’t have to settle on just one game. Many arcade game machines include a bunch of your favourite old-school games all-in-one.

Amazon Australia has a wide variety of more modern, compact and lightweight arcade game machines to choose from. See the most popular arcade games here.

Like pinball machines, you can often find used or vintage pinball machines on sites like Gumtree or eBay, and there are several retailers that specialise in arcade machines located around the country.

Golf Games

If you love your golf, bring your game into the man cave. There are a bunch of different types and styles of golf games you can play indoors.

Popular golf games include basic indoor putting practice mats, chipping nets, indoor golf training sets, interactive golf putting games, and even mini golf courses. And get this, even a mini golf putting games you play on the toilet (even more surprising, there’s a bunch of them).

Chess

Although I said that this guide isn’t about board games, I’m making an exception with chess. Few games have the kind of perennial popularity (sometimes bordering on obsession) among all sorts of people that chess has.

Even better, a beautifully crafted chess set, or standalone chess table, can really add something to the look and feel of your man cave.

What’s more, it’s great for keeping the old synapses firing.

For something a bit different, think about a stand-up, oversized chess set with a board on the floor. A checkers or backgammon set or table could be other options if you’re not a chess fan.

Check out Amazon Australia to compare a selection of the most popular chess sets and accessories.

Dominoes

Again, I get it; dominoes doesn’t really fit in with the other table and arcade-style games in this article. But there’s a good reason I’ve added it here, and why you might want to consider a good quality dominoes set among your man cave games.

If you’ve ever travelled in countries like Greece, parts of the Middle East or even the Caribbean, you might have noticed bunches of guys spending their days hanging around bars and cafes much of the day, drinking and playing dominoes. All these blokes can’t be wrong. And to me, that means dominoes has real man cave cred.

All you need is a set of tiles, a mate, a drink and a bunch of time to sit around and do nothing, and you’re off to the races.

Casino Games (Poker and Blackjack)

For many a man cave aficionado, a poker table is an absolute essential. A few blokes, a few bucks and a few beers, and there’s nothing better any night of the week.

Poker, blackjack and other casino game tables come in also sorts of types and styles, not to mention price tags. Round, octagon, wood, felt, standalone, folding, basic (i.e. cheap), and VIP deluxe styles with all the bells and whistles (i.e. expensive).

And there are all sorts of options when it comes to chips, cards and other poker accessories. Don’t forget the archetype poker visor if you want to really impress your mates and look like the real deal (pun intended).

For something different, consider a blackjack table, a combination of the two or multiple-game casino game table.

If you’re looking to pick up a poker table, blackjack table or multi-game casino table, you’ll find speciality retailers across the country. Some major national retailers also stock them in more basic styles.

Basketball Arcade Games

If you’re looking for a slam dunk (yes, I’m going there) when decking out your man cave, then an electronic basketball arcade game or hoop games are another cool active game option for your cave.

Many arcade-style basketball games come with twin hoops, so they are great for a two-person challenge. With more people, you can play tournament style. As you would expect, basketball arcade games are just as popular with kids as with kid-ults.

Better still, there are a lot of options, so you can be sure to find one that fits the space you have available, and they can be surprisingly affordable.

Amazon Australia is your best place to start with this one. Check out the most popular basketball arcade games in oz.

10-Pin Bowling, Skittles and Carpet Bowls

Here’s another one of those off-the-wall ideas I mentioned up top. Indoor bowling has long been an accessible worldwide favourite sport. While outdoor bowls have long been a popular sport in Australia.

Bocce (Italian), boules (French) and petanque (French, mainly in Provence) are other popular variations on the theme – and, like carpet bowls, can also be played indoors, assuming you’ve got at least a little bit of space available.

Check out bowls and skittles sets, carpet bowlscombined bocce, boules, and petanque sets on Amazon Australia.

Shuffleboard

If you haven’t spent much time on cruise ships, shuffleboard might be a mystery to you. The idea is fairly simple. You use what they call a cue (more like a broom) to push weighted disks (or pucks) down a wooden surface with the aim of having them rest within a marked scoring area. Simple and surprisingly fun.

Different variations of shuffleboard can be played on the ground with large disks and pucks, or there is a table variation. In a man cave, both could work, but the table version is probably the pick. Shuffleboard tables are quite long but narrow, so they could be a practical option for a lot of man caves.

Like all the variations of bowls, it can get quite addictive.

With a bunch of different types and styles of shuffleboard tables available, it’s pretty easy to find one to suit your man cave style and budget.

Check out shuffleboard tables on Amazon Australia for options.

Multi-Game Tables

Multi-game tables or combination tables are great if you want to get more bang for your man cave buck.

There are a bunch of different brands and styles of multi-game tables. They typically come in three types convertible, rotational and flip-top styles.

Convertible multi-game tables are similar to flip-top multi-game tables that have different tabletops that fit on top of or within the table frame for different games.

Some of these convertible-style multi-game tables offer up to 12 different games you can play, though the four-in-one style table is more common, including the most popular games such as foosball, table tennis, air hockey and pool or snooker.

With the rotational style multi-game tables, you simply roll the top over to swap games, say billiards, to ping pong. Some have a unique design where they can incorporate three games in one rotational table.

There are many choices of brands and styles to choose from. Check out multi-game tables on Amazon Australia to get a feel for what’s out there.
